Norman Liss Honored by Cambridge Who's Who for Excellence in Recreation Therapy
Norman Liss named Professional of the Year by leading registry
BATAVIA, NY, September 9, 2010 /United States PR News/ -- Norman Liss, Recreational Therapist for The New York State School for the Blind, has been named Cambridge Who's Who Professional of the Year in Recreation Therapy. While inclusion in the Cambridge Who's Who Registry is an honor, only two male and two female members in each discipline are named professionals of the year. The Cambridge Who's Who selection committee chooses these special honorees based on their professional accomplishments, academic achievements and leadership abilities.
This year will mark Norman Liss' 10th anniversary with The New York State School for the Blind as Recreational Therapist. There, he draws upon his practiced field expertise to plan and manage recreational activities for visually impaired and disabled students aged five to 21. His aim, he noted in a recent interview, is to help such individuals to develop self-sufficiency through recreational play, specialized instruction and a full range of clinical and support services tailored to meet the needs of each student. And Mr. Liss is in good company—at The New York State School for the Blind, teachers are professionally prepared in the areas of visual impairment, elementary and secondary education, and special education. Mr. Liss, himself, is a certified Strategies for Crisis Intervention and Prevention Instructor, certified in CPR and lifesaving, and bus driving. He credits his success, however, to the children with whom he works.
Mr. Liss was named the Federated Appeal Compeer of the Year in 2004. Moving forward, he will continue to teach at his post, as well as maintain active affiliation with the Batavia Lions Club.
Opened in 1868, The New York State School for the Blind just celebrated its 140 anniversary with a recently built handicapped-accessible playground. Its mission, through integrated residential programming, is to provide a foundation of learning that will enable its students to become contributing members in a diverse society, to achieve their highest level of independence and to afford them the ability to live in a least restrictive environment.
