Clinical Trial Optimizing Dendritic Cell Vaccination for Low Grade (Grade II) Glioma Patients Now Open and Accepting Patients

Miles For Hope announced today that the brain tumor vaccine clinical trial, Optimizing Dendritic Cell Vaccination for Low Grade Glioma Patients, is now open and accepting new patients.

CLEARWATER, FL, January 13, 2012 /United States PR News/ -- Miles For Hope announced today that the brain tumor vaccine clinical trial, Optimizing Dendritic Cell Vaccination for Low Grade Glioma Patients, is now open and accepting new patients. Patients must have a Grade II Brain Tumor and surgery at UCLA to qualify for the trial. The trial is a Phase II Clinical Trial Evaluating Autologous Dendritic Cells Pulsed with Tumor Lysate Antigen for the Treatment of Low-grade Gliomas.

This clinical trial was proudly funded by Miles For Hope, Accelerate Brain Cancer Cure and The Stephen M. Coffman Charitable Trust. In July 2011, these non-profit organizations came together to jointly fund a $100,000 research grant to University of California Los Angeles (UCLA) neurosurgeon Linda Liau, M.D., PhD to begin this clinical trial, Optimizing Dendritic Cell Vaccination for Low Grade Glioma Patients. This is the first trial of its kind for patients that have been diagnosed with low grade gliomas, a common form of brain cancer. This research has the potential to improve the lives of brain cancer patients.

This grant combines Miles For Hope and the Stephen M. Coffman Charitable Trust's commitment to increase awareness and funding for cutting-edge research with Accelerate Brain Cancer Cure's dedication to advancing therapies leading to a cure for brain cancer.

According to Barb Gibbs, Miles For Hope co-founder, this clinical trial was the vision of Miles For Hope and the reason the organization was initially started. Her husband, the late Robert Gibbs, lost his seven-year battle with brain cancer in December 2011. Robert Gibbs was diagnosed in 2004 with brain cancer at the age of 34. After researching possible treatment options, they found an experimental brain cancer vaccine. However, Gibbs did not qualify for the vaccine at UCLA until 2008 after his second brain surgery when it was discovered the brain cancer reached a Stage III.

Barb Gibbs stated "Our goal with this trial is to provide patients with the hope that Bob never had during his battle. The hope is that brain tumors can be treated effectively as a Grade II with a Dendritic Cell Vaccine increasing survival rates. Bob would have been thrilled to see this vision become a reality so that now, other patients have access to better treatment alternatives at an earlier stage."

Brain tumors affect over 200,000 people each year; one person every three minutes in the United States. They are also the leading cause of solid tumor cancer deaths in children under the age of 20. It is estimated that over 600,000 people are battling a brain tumor in the United States. In addition, brain tumors are the second leading cause of cancer death in males under the age of 29 and ranked fifth as the cause of cancer death in female adults age 20-39.
